The Specialist Section-Independent Practice supports and promotes occupational therapists working in independent practice – whether considering, new to or established; and including sole traders, companies, not for profit organisations and contractors.
Aims
- To support members in the start-up, running and development of their businesses.
- To provide networking and learning opportunities for members.
- To raise the profile of independent occupational therapists and the profession.
- To enable members of the public and other professionals to find an independent occupational therapist.

Please email coordinator@rcotss-ip.org.uk to request a free profile listing in our online Find an Occupational Therapist Directory - the only list of independent occupational therapists with RCOT. This will enable you to advertise your occupational therapy services to the public and other professionals, either as an individual or business.Profile holders are promoted as being:
- professionally qualified
- registered with and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- members of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT)
(the professional body in the UK for occupational therapists)
- covered by individual professional indemnity insurance
- compliant with the Specialist Section – Independent Practice Code of Business Practice
- Communication, networking and learning
You will have access to a range of activities and events providing communication, networking and learning opportunities - with the sharing of business/practice expertise and resources, including: our National Facebook Group and Regional WhatsApp Groups; our quarterly National Networking sessions (online) and Regional Networking events (f2f) (2 p/region p/a); and our quarterly Medico-Legal Forum Networking sessions (quarterly).
- Training and CPD
Our Start-Up and Succeed (SUAS) one-day online course; and our monthly webinars covering a range of business/practice topics.
- Annual conference
Providing the opportunity to meet and network with your fellow members and to contribute to your CPD - with a conference theme based around independent practice and an overarching aim to inform, inspire and motivate, and identify future priorities so as to support best practice and business development.

- RCOT Professional Membership - £35
- RCOT Self Employed Membership - £35
- RCOT Overseas Membership - £15
- RCOT Associate Membership - £15
- RCOT Retired Membership - £15
- RCOT Student Membership - £5
To become a member of the Specialist Section – Independent Practice:
- You must be a RCOT member and HCPC registered.
- You will need to log into your member portal on the RCOT website and select ‘My Specialist Sections’.
