Get involved

The RCOT Specialist Section – Neurological Practice are keen to provide opportunities for members to contribute and get involved with the section. Opportunities for members to contribute to the section are broad and very much welcomed.  

As stakeholders RCOT Specialist Section – Neurological Practice members can assist and contribute to formal consultations including among others, clinical practice quality standards and guidelines to name a few.

Research is a key focus of the section. Benchmarking exercises and surveys are regularly sent out by your peers seeking your knowledge and expertise, abstracts and articles regularly posted on the webpages and placed within the newsletter.

Members are frequently invited to place articles in the newsletter, which is sent only to RCOT Specialist Section – Neurological Practice members. The section welcomes any contributions including reflections from study day events, conferences or introducing your service or showcasing best practice.

Research and development

The RCOT Specialist Section – Neurological Practice support the principles that as registered Occupational Therapists’ we have a professional duty to engage in research.  The section supports, and actively encourages members to get involved in research. Particularly research which has been identified as a priority by the RCOT with people who use our services.

Research is about finding out new knowledge that could lead to changes in treatments, policies, or care (NIHR, 2018).  It is about asking important questions about the services that we all deliver on a day-to-day basis, broadening our knowledge, learning from that knowledge, and using it to evidence our practice, not just in the UK but worldwide.  

Members could consider:

  • Design and present a poster at a conference.   
  • Seek speaking opportunities to disseminate your research ideas, through local and national conferences, such as, RCOT annual national conference.
  • The Council for Allied Health Professions Research (CAHPR) has local hubs all over the UK and Ireland.  They have been established to support research, and have a wealth of resources, free to occupational therapists.
  • Make local links with local research champions and networks.  These might be Occupational Therapists, or your managers.  They might be other health professionals with an interest/expertise in a similar research topic. Seek out research leaders and appropriate networks to develop potential mentoring relationships.

Some practical tips:  

  • Build research engagement into your personal development plan. You might set up a journal club, peer review journal articles (may need further training), publish your ideas in a blog, trust newsletter or lay publications, for example. Developing writing skills will increase your potential to disseminate research findings.
  • Talk to your local audit service, to develop service improvement ideas.
  • Use social media to connect to other researchers and colleagues.  
  • Get to know who your research funders are, and what they are looking for.  
  • Set up an e-journal club. Get involved.

E-newsletters

The e-newsletters are produced monthly as one of your membership only resources. It includes articles, study days, course reviews, conference feedback, research developments and up-to-date information on neurology news and events.

Occupational therapy for people with Parkinson’s second edition (October 2018)

Fully updated to incorporate a wealth of new evidence, this guidance:

  • Places the person with Parkinson’s and their family at the centre of all occupational therapy interventions.
  • Supports occupational therapists in the holistic assessment and treatment of people living with Parkinson’s.
  • Introduces novel and condition-specific occupational therapy interventions.
  • Summarises and interprets the best available evidence to support best-practice occupational therapy interventions in the UK.

AHP Competency Framework for Progressive Neurological Conditions

The AHP competency framework for progressive neurological conditions has been published. This work has been completed with the support of the MNDA, TIMS, Parkinson’s Excellence Network, and is endorsed by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
