The Challenge
During the lockdowns patients in hospital were not able to have visits from their loved ones, making patients and family members feel distant, upset and frustrated. This was particularly difficult for a mother in hospital on my ward.
The Change
As a student on placement, I was able to make phone calls to patient’s family members. Although not a big change, I began asking if there was a message I could pass to their loved ones. The mother's message to her daughter was "I love and miss you."
The Impact
Taking the time to connect the patients to their loved ones and vice versa gave the families some reassurance and raised spirits for the patients. The daughter was emotional and relieved at hearing her mother's words.
