Feedback from the consultation and how we responded
We asked our members, staff and stakeholders for feedback on the draft EDB strategy in July and August 2023. We received over 1,500 responses to the survey and additional feedback through five focus groups. Enventure, our research partner, managed this process, analysed the feedback and produced a final report that included recommendations we used to shape the final strategy.
More than 70% of responders said the ambition, priorities and aims were very clear, with 95% of respondents reporting they were very clear or clear to some extent. We’ve shared some examples of how we developed the strategy based on the feedback we received.
You said: Condense the number of aims and consider creating a single list of aims that covers all audiences and/or changing the order of aims, in terms of priority and clarity.
We did: We edited and re-organised the aims by strategic priority to make the EDB strategy clear and to ensure it relates to our organisational strategy. The action plan will include actions for the different stakeholders we work with.
You said: Be transparent that RCOT is not currently at the forefront of EDB excellence.
We did: We added detail to our vision, to be clear that this is what we are working towards by 2027, whilst acknowledging that we are not there yet. The introductions from Odeth Richardson, Chair, and Steve Ford, CEO are clear that we haven’t always got EDB right in the past.
You said: Use clear, direct, simple language and avoid jargon and buzzwords. Use proactive/active and inspirational language.
We did: We edited the strategy and supporting documents to make sure that the language we’re using is specific and relevant. We have kept key phrases and statements that were developed in the co-creation of the strategy with groups and individuals who experience discrimination. A list of useful terminology is included on our website.
You said: Detail how the strategy will be delivered and how RCOT will report on and be and accountable for delivery.
We did: We will publish the action plan to accompany this strategy by the end of January 2024. This will include specific actions we will undertake, the timeframe and the department leading each action. This strategy includes example actions from that plan.
We will produce an annual impact report detailing our progress. The RCOT Senior Leadership Team and Council are ultimately accountable for ensuring this strategy is delivered.
You said: Include the timeframe in the strategy document.
We did: We made sure that the strategy timeframe, 2024–2027, is more visible in the strategy and supporting documents.
You said: Review how strategy is presented online.
We did: We have used the website viewing data and specific feedback from the survey to improve the design of the strategy webpages.
You said: Provide clarity around who is meant by ‘leaders’ and ‘we’, whilst ensuring that the sense of collective responsibility comes through.
We did: We changed the strategy to ensure that it is specific about who ‘we’ means in each context. We used clear and direct language to clarify that EDB is everyone’s responsibility.
