Student Story: Kwaku, 3rd year student
Kwaku Agyemang is a third-year student at London South Bank University studying for a part-time BSc in occupational therapy.
My role as a sports technician, working with people with mental illness and learning disabilities, coupled with being supervised by passionate occupational therapists, motivated me to explore occupational therapy more.
I would advise someone considering studying to become an occupational therapist to “GO FOR IT” and it will be the most pleasant of surprises.
I believed the profession matched my personality and positive outlook on life and took the big decision to study to become qualified.
What I have enjoyed most whilst studying occupational therapy is learning about the diverse range of the profession. Coming from a mental health background, my knowledge has been broadened in regards to physical health and the impact they both have on each other.
As a result of my studies, I have learnt about the impact a range of conditions can have on an individual and how to apply the primary principle of occupation-focused interventions as a means of recovery and self-management.
University has provided the core knowledge and through placement, experience needed to work with people and this will definitely influence my future practice.
I would advise someone considering studying to become an occupational therapist to “GO FOR IT” and it will be the most pleasant of surprises.
