Our priorities
Primary care is one of our key priorities because it's the first point of contact or front door to the NHS, social care, and general practice.
It includes the day-to-day healthcare available in every local area and first place people go when they need healthcare advice, diagnosis, assessments, therapy, or treatment.
Primary care is often provided by practitioners (including occupational therapists) based in the community or GP practice rather than specialist services or hospitals.
90% of the public’s contact with health professionals is via GP surgeries but most don't have access to occupational therapy.
For example, there are about 8000 GP surgeries in the UK and only 300 occupational therapists working in them. We estimate we need at least another 2000 occupational therapists to get national coverage.
