Risk Assessments for Single-Handed Care
Single-handed care, ‘reduced carer handling’ or ‘proportionate care’ is a hot topic in today’s manual handling and occupational therapy practice – reflecting a wider trend towards more effective and person-centered support.
Single-handed or proportionate care requires professionals to complete individualized manual handling assessments, highlighting what the person can do for themselves as part of their daily routine and identifying equipment and techniques which will enable them to be more active and autonomous participants in their daily routines. In completing assessments occupational therapists are required to consider risks and develop interventions that manage them, enabling our clients to embrace opportunities around them. As a result, occupational therapists are moving away from ‘status quo’ recommendations, using clinical reasoning to develop manual handling and support plans as individual as the people they are written for.
In this session Deb Harris of A1 Risk Solutions will discuss risks commonly considered when recommending single-handed care. Deb is a highly experienced occupational therapist who is knowledgeable in all aspects of manual handling and risk assessments, providing evidence-based training and guidance to practitioners. In this session Deb will reflect upon her experiences and findings from a range of proportionate care projects across local systems.
This session is aimed at occupational therapists who assess and develop manual handling support plans. In this session Deb will discuss how to assess risks within proportionate support planning, with interaction and questions welcome from the audience.
