Single-Handed Care: What is it and when should I consider it?
Single-handed care, ‘reduced carer handling’ or ‘proportionate care’ is a hot topic in today’s manual handling and occupational therapy practice – reflecting a wider trend towards more effective and person-centered support.
Single-handed care reflects the need to complete individualized manual handling plans, highlighting what the person can do for themselves as active participants in receipt of support – and exploring what equipment and techniques can maximize their functional abilities.
In this session Deb Harris of A1 Risk Solutions will introduce what single-handed care is and when it should be considered as part of a manual handling assessment. Deb is a highly experienced occupational therapist who works across local systems and is a leading expert in single-handed care, having led a range of country-wide projects assessing single-handed or proportionate care programs.
In this session Deb will provide an introduction to single-handed care, discuss when it should be considered and take questions from the audience. While this session is aimed at students, it is open to any members not familiar with single-handed care.
