Occupational Performance Coaching (OPC) is an evidence-based intervention for rehabilitation specialists, including Occupational Therapists, developed by Dr. Fi Graham, University of Otago New Zealand. This course is delivered using interactive online platforms with demonstrations, video examples and break out rooms, providing opportunities to practice coaching skills and to discuss how you can translate this knowledge into your practice.
OPC is a way of working with caregivers to achieve goals for themselves, their children and/or families. This approach elicits caregivers’ strengths and creativity to find enduring solutions. OPC is relevant to all health conditions that restrict children’s participation in home, school or community settings. OPC involves highly collaborative goal setting and shared analysis of situations with caregivers. Communication with caregivers is structured in ways that enhance caregiver engagement and sense of competence.
Course Objectives:
Following the completion of the 3-Modules (over 3 x 3 hour sessions and a 1 hour follow up session) participants will be able to:
- Describe the philosophy and purpose of coaching in the context of paediatrics.
- Demonstrate the key techniques of coaching namely meaning-orientated goal setting, eliciting caregiver’s knowledge, and shared performance analysis.
- Have the opportunity to practice these techniques and to reflect on how OPC can be used in their own clinical area
Who should attend?
The course will be relevant to Occupational Therapists working in paediatrics in schools, child development services, rehabilitation, community or education settings. The OPC approach has been extremely beneficial through the current climate of teletherapy enabling coaching of families in their own settings and being able to journey alongside them in their daily lives.

Due to privacy and copyright these sessions are not able to be recorded.
