Clinical forums

As a member of the specialist section, you can join the specialist clinical forums.  

The clinical forums represent subsections of membership and clinical practice areas within neurological rehabilitation. The forums have been differentiated by diagnostic groups, as well as the support identified and requested by the members.  

There are three clinical forums including brain injury, stroke, and long-term conditions. Members can join one or several forums depending on their field of interest or work area.

Clinical Forum: Brain Injury

The brain injury forum supports delivery of best practice in occupational therapy across the UK for people working with adults with acquired brain injury.  

The committee represents the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section Neurological Practice regarding national policies and developments relating to Brain Injury.

The forum has represented neurological occupational therapist at national committees, supported the production of clinical guidelines and similar documents.  

The forum aims to influence the commissioning agenda regarding access to specialist neurological rehabilitation in collaboration with other agencies.

The committee addresses the needs of occupational therapists working with adults with acquired brain injury by:

  • Raising awareness of the role and value of occupational therapists working with people with acquired brain injury across the UK.
  • Raising awareness of the role and value of neurological occupational therapists in health, social care, education, independent sector, private practice, and research settings.
  • Working collaboratively with relevant agencies to develop resources, provide training and promote research to inform best practice.

Clinical Forum: Long Term Conditions

The long-term conditions forum supports delivery of best practice for occupational therapy across the UK for people working with adults with long term neurological conditions (LTNC).  

The forum's remit is to focus on three of the four categories of LTNC identified in the National Service Framework 2005. These include intermittent and unpredictable conditions, such as epilepsy and early-stage Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Progressive conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Parkinson's disease or later stage MS. Stable neurological conditions, but with changing needs due to development or aging including cerebral palsy in adults.

Committee members represent the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section Neurological Practice regarding national policies and developments relating to LTNC.

The committee aims to address the needs of occupational therapists working with adults with LTNC by:

  • Raising awareness of the occupational therapist’s role with people with LTNC
  • Developing policies and clinical guidelines with partner agencies

Clinical Forum: Stroke

The Stroke clinical forum supports delivery of best practice for occupational therapy across the UK for people working with adults living with stroke.

Committee members represent the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section - Neurological Practice on national developments and meetings relating to stroke practice.  This has included, among other things, the Royal College of Physicians Intercollegiate Working Party for Stroke (National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke), UK Stroke Forum and NICE.  

The committee aims to address national needs of occupational therapists working with stroke by:

  • Raising awareness of the occupational therapist’s role working with people  who have experienced a brain haemorrhage or stroke  
  • Developing policies and clinical guidelines with partner agencies
  • Producing training resources and courses to develop competencies in membership
