Mapule Masemola-Ralehika (EDB Lead)
I graduated as an occupational therapist in 2003/4, from the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa). I then went on to obtain a PgCert in Neuro Rehabilitation from Coventry University; and then a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Regenesys Business School. I am what one might refer to as a ‘generalist’ in my occupational therapy practice – with special interest in adults and older adults. I do however, from time to time, take on younger adults and children’s cases. I have worked in both acute inpatient (A&E) and acute medical/surgical settings; inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation; and for various councils doing major and minor adaptations. I have also previously been involved in the starting and facilitation of two projects which focused on patient discharge to assessment models: one with Warwickshire County Council – as a sole occupational therapist amongst social workers; and the another in Sandwell – as part of the nurses/rehabilitation team. I was also part of the therapist team that started the A&E services at the City hospital – which has since grown and become a well-functioning service in its own now.
Equity, Diversity and Belonging is crucial in creating a positive and productive work environment. As occupational therapists, it is important that each and every one of us feels represented and heard in one way or another; and that opportunities are equally available to all. This will translate into how, as occupational therapists, we are able to deliver effective services to our clients/patients. In working in various sectors (private, NHS, council and community) across the UK (Wales, England and Northern Ireland), I feel I have gained insight into a range of organisational structures and cultures. I therefore look forward to the opportunity that I feel the role of EDB Lead offers – that of broadening my horizons further; and, with further experience, enabling me to contribute positively within the occupational therapy community generally and, especially, independent practice.
